Sotheby's Goes Green -- With Jewels and Jadeite

Sotheby's Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite

Green in the theme for the upcoming Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite at Sotheby's Auction House. The auction will take place in Hong Kong on April 8, 2013 and has some truly stunning pieces of jewelry and jadeite art.

The auction will present an exquisite collection of fine jewels combining great rarity and beauty.  The sale is exemplified by the Blushing Gold ring. This great treasure, recently exhibited at the Royal Kensington Palace, features a fancy vivid yellow diamond of 13.10 carats, embellished by Argyle pink diamonds. Also stupendous is an exceptional 3.04-carat heart-shaped fancy intense blue diamond.

While these pieces were beauties, my favorites were the big array of green jewelry, featuring emeralds, and jade.    Here are some highlights:

Jadeite Teapot Bamboo Ornament:

Impressive Jadeite and Diamond Necklace:

Carved Emerald Ruby and Diamond Flower Brooch by Cartier

Emerald and Diamond Ivy Necklace by Michele Della Valle
Jadeite, Garnet and Diamond Earrings Kai-Yin Lo

Jadeite, Rock Crystal, Garnet and Diamond Brooch Kai-Yin Lo

You can browse the full auction catalog here.

I'd be hard press to say which is my favorite but I think the ivy necklace gets my vote. Which is your favorite piece?

Jane A. Gordon Flower Jewelry

Flower Power from Jane A. Gordon

I love gardening. It is a passion with me and I spend many hours every week tending my flower garden. Spring is almost here in NC, and my bulbs are starting to spring up everywhere. The daffodils are out and my tulips will be next.

With such an interest in gardening, it will be no surprise that I particularly love flower jewelry too.  I am always on the lookout for new flower jewelry designs.

One designer that I recently discovered is Jane A. Gordon.  She makes many different styles, but also does collections and many of these are flower themed.  One of her collections is the daisy collection.  (my birth month flower!)

From her website:  A celebration of nature in form and color, The Daisy Collection reflects nature's undeniable beauty, interpreted in the staggering variety of colors given to us by the earth. Both the petals and the interchangeable centers of the flowers are available in any stone, which can then be combined with many different necklaces. If there is a color in your imagination, it has been given to us by the earth in the form of a stone.

The daisies are available in necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets and enhancers. In this ultra feminine collection - more is more! The daisies can be layered in one or two colors, or a rainbow variety. The glittering romance of this flowered jewelry lends itself to the subtlety of one daisy alone, or a virtual wearable garden. They never overwhelm the wearer, but enhance her with a natural shimmering element of glamour and assist her in expressing her unique and personal style.

Here are a few of her creations from the daisy collection:

Jane A. Gordon jewelry is available  by retail venues including Saks Fifth Avenut, Fortunoff, Cyrstal Cruises, and Royal Caribbean Cruises.

Designer of the Week - David Andersen

David Andersen - Scandinavian Silver at its Best

David Andersen jewelry is a family operation that was founded in 1896 and has been handed down through the family ever since then.

The designs are very high quality and also very collectible, particularly among collectors of Scandinavian silver jewelry.   Designs are the work of many silversmiths but all have only the David Andersen mark on them.

David Andersen jewelry is famous for their Basse-taille leaf pins which were made in most jewelry styles - bracelets, earrings, necklaces, brooches and sets.

Many marks are evident on the pieces:
  • picture logo of tongs and a hammer (late 19th century).
  • D-A 830s (early 20th century)
  • Christiana D. Andersen 830s (early 20th century)
  • D-A925S Norway Sterling with balancing scale logo (mid 20th century on)
  • David-Anderson Norway Sterling Handmade 925S
  • DA-Norway sterling
  • David-Andersen Norway Sterling
The last three markings were all used Mid 20th century until now.

Here are some examples of David Andersen designs:

For those who collect, all David Andersen pieces are good investments.  For the best investment, be sure to examine the enameling to make sure it is in good condition.  Look for older pieces with the D-A 830S markings and also look for vintage sets in their original boxes.

Vintage Jewelry Lane has a nice range of David Andersen leaf jewelry.  You can view them on this page of my website.

Vintage Fashion Shots - How Times Have Changed

A Look Back with Nostalgic Vintage Fashion Shots

Fashions have changed through the years, that is for sure.  For me, there is nothing as nostalgic and looking back at fashion shots from the past.  It is a stark reminder that what we think of as fashion now is nothing like the trends from days gone by.

On my Facebook page, Vintage Jewelry Lane, I often feature these nostalgic images, as well as modern contemporary fashion photos.  I thought it would be fun to look back in time by viewing some of the older ones.

Louis Vitton
Avante Garde - Louis Vitton.  We don't see this on public transport today!

1900 street fashion
1900's street Fashion.  This is a far cry from street fashion today, isn't it?

Anyone for a ride?

This one is my personal favorite. She looks as though she doesn't have a care in the world!

Lucille Ball
Lucille Ball in all her finery. This comedienne was a beautiful woman.

Carmen Miranda and Her Platforms.  Now this is a lady who loves shoes!

Vintage Hats.  Not something you see every day.  Remember buying a new hat for Easter each year?

Many thanks to my Facebook Friends for the images.
