October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - Show Your Support

The month of October is dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness Month ― especially the importance of early detection of the disease. Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women in the US and it can also develop in some men as well.

Many of us have had close relatives or other loved ones affected by the disease. My hair dresser discovered that she had it last year, and it was a very sad time.  Seeing someone who works with people's hair on a daily basis having to shave her head was very emotional for us both and for her other customers too.

My networking friends and I are combining to promote the cause in our own way by bringing attention to the cause through the color pink and also through the promotion of items which feature the traditional breast cancer ribbon.    If any of these appeal to you, just click on the photo and it will take you to the page where you can get more details.

Here is a poignant Facebook page made by one of my dear friends, Linda Kelly Lee who has a sister with Breast cancer.   The same lady who made the page also made a video of her having her head shaved as a show of support to her sister.  You can view the video here.  It has almost 10,000 views and is getting more each day.  Linda's sister's Facebook page can be found here.  It has many inspirational photos and discussions about Breast cancer.

Another of my networking friends is running a Pose in Pink Photo contest running for the whole month of October. You can find details of the contest on her Facebook page.    She also has  a daily giveaway of PINK items in the month of October.  Facts & Games dealing w/ BC awareness will be featured the entire month.

Finally, will you take the Pink Ribbon Pledge today to support the cause?

Early detection is one of the main focuses of breast cancer awareness month.  One of the best ways to support the cause is to do the things that will go a long way towards preventing it from happening to you.  There are many things that you can do.
  • Breast Self Exams - easy techniques that you can do so that you know what is normal in your breast.
  • Regular mammograms
  • Professional Breast Exams by your doctor during your normal checkups.
For more information about screening and early detection, click here to visit the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month’s website.

As an extra way of promoting the cause, I have also put together a hand picked list at Bonanza, called Pretty Pink Ribbons Support the Cause. You can view the hand picked list on this page of the Bonanza site.

Purple Perfection - My Latest Hand Picked List at Bonanza

Creating hand picked lists at Bonanza is sort of like window shopping without money.  One can browse though the listings, add them to a list and then publish the list so that buyers at Bonanza can see a group of items all of the same theme.

The seller who puts together the list, me in this case, is only allowed one of their own items on the list, so it is not so much about self promotion as it is about adding to the community.

My latest hand picked list is called Purple Perfection. To me, the color purple is associated with royalty, passion and luxury.  It is a deep, rich color that I think of as the days get cooler and I start thinking about darker fashion choices.

Here are a few of the items in the list.

These are just a few of the items on the list. There are about 20 more.  You can view Purple Perfection on this page of Bonanza.

If you could take the time to make a comment on the bottom of the list, it may help get it promoted to the main page of the site.  Many thanks, and happy window shopping with purple perfection.

Networking Group on Facebook - Are you Interested?

Social networking for businesses has been the catch phrase for some time now.  Anyone who sells online knows that Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus,  and Pinterest, as well as a blog are very important tools in a marketing approach for their business.

Up until recently, social networking was something that I dabbled in, but it wasn't a big part of my overall plan.  All of that changed when I recently joined a very motivated group of sellers on Facebook who cross promote each other on all of the social networks.

It has been a learning curve for me, but I am starting to see the benefits of networking, and believe that it has meant more sales and followers of my business on all the social platforms.

Is networking something that you would like to do but don't know how?  Are you the type of person who is motivated and likes to learn new business tips and tricks?  Are you prepared to put a bit of time into a group that is supportive, even though it might take some time to learn?

If so, my Facebook networking group might be just the one for you.  It is called Networking Together.  The group requires a Facebook account and approval from the moderators, but we are always looking for new, motivated members.  If you have a Facebook fan page (and if you don't, why not? They are a great marketing tool...) that is even better, since it will be promoted by the group.

Recognize these symbols?  We promote, on a daily basis, to all platforms.  And as a special promotion, once a week we choose one member of the group and all members promote this special person.  I was chosen last week, and was truly honored by, and grateful for, the support.

If you feel this is the type of group that you would like to join, and are prepared to put a bit of time into learning what makes us tick, please go to my Facebook page, or that of the group moderator, send a friend request and ask that you be suggested to the group and we will take it from there.  You can also leave a comment with your Facebook user ID and I can recommend you to the group.

Cameos on the Runway and on my boards at Pinterest

Ah, Pinterest.  That lovely site that captures me and takes up all my free time. What can be more relaxing than looking at lovely images of things that capture my imagination.

Today it was cameos.  Lanvin seemed to be featuring them on the runways with their fashions for fall, so I filled up my cameo board with some of my favorites.

This is the runway shot that started it all:

And these are some of the pins that it inspired.  All of the cameos, and many more, featured here are available from Vintage Jewelry Lane.

How to Get The Most out of Pinterest - 10 Tips

Anyone who is even remotely aware of social networking has to be familiar with the site Pinterest.  For those of you who aren't, my impression of it is that it is a large site which seems like a series of virtual scrapbooks.

It is fun to grab an hour and spend it looking through the other "pins", adding them to your boards and just admiring beautiful things.

I joined quite a while ago, but have not done much with it until recently when I became involved in a networking group.  The question that keeps coming to my mind is "how do I make the best use of the site" from a networking point of view.

I've been researching and reading articles that other bloggers have written about this subject and several suggestions keep getting repeated.

1.  Organize your boards.  Use playful and creative titles and have a good mix of content which is both yours and others.  Be sure to have keywords in the description area for good SEO.   Even thought the image on Pinterest is the main thing, for search engines, the pictures don't count. The KEYWORDS do.  Use them wisely.

2.  Give credit to the source of the original pin.  Re-pin content from other users for good social interaction.  Check your pins to make sure that the source is legitimate. I can't stress this enough.  As I was experimenting with re-pinning, I discovered that about 50% of the pins either end with a page not found error or link to nothing.  Check your pins.

3.  Link your account to Facebook, Twitter and other sites.  Find friends and followers.   The more you are pinned and commented on, the better your pins will get followed, re-pinned and commented on.  Add Pinterest buttons to your Facebook page and follow me on Pinterest buttons to your websites and blogs to get more followers.

4. Follow, Comment, Like.  Rinse repeat.  Can't say this enough.

5. Remember to be social and polite. Comment on others pins.  Tag with the @ sign and their name. Thank people for pins. All of this will help to get you followers.  Thank people who re-pin you.

6.  Don't just self promote the items that you have for sale.  No one wants to come to your boards to be spammed with product.  Pinterest is a lifestyle site.  Open up and let people discover who you are.  Pins things that interest you,and inspire you, in addition to the products you sell.  People will shop with you if they find that you have something they want to buy, but they don't go there looking to purchase.

7.  To find out what content of yours has been pinned use the following URL:  http://www.pinterest.com/source/WEBSITENAME.COM  In place of the word URL, put your website or blog address without the www.

8.  Re - pins are important.  There are some key factors for getting them.
  • taller images are more likely to get re-pinned than wider ones
  • the most pinnable images are those related to food
  • Pins that are "liked" are more popular than those with comments.
  • Pin descriptions about 20 characters long get more re-pins

9.  If you are pinning items which you have for sale, use a good description and add the price with a dollar sign before it. This will put the price on the top left of your pin and place it in the gift drop down browse function if it is pinned recently.

 10. Think about what you would share if you saw it.  Be sure that your photos are clear and of good quality.  Otherwise, you may be having fun, but are just wasting time if networking is your aim.  The best days for Pinterest are supposed to be Thursday and Saturday, so keep that in mind when you do a lot of pinning. This could change at any time, of course.

For me, using Pinterest is a work in progress.  Like everything else connected to my business, I will get out of it what I put into it.  If I take the time to make my boards interesting, then people will want to continue to see what I pin to them.    Hopefully, the same will happen for you.

Happy pinning!

Remembering 9/11 in Poetry

No one can forget the feelings we all had that morning when the twin towers in NY came down.  Each of us experienced it in a different way, depending on many factors, but there was a common spirit with all of us that day, even if it was for only a short period of time.

Life goes on, and remembering tragic experiences such as 911 seem to feel less and less emotional as we all get on with our life in the best way we can. It is a necessary thing to do, and time eases much of the pain these sorts of things cause us.

We don't discuss the day as often as we did, but we do remember.  As I sat to write this blog posting, I put my thoughts into a poem.  It expresses much of what I felt then and still feel now.

Many things have been said over the last 11 years but these words still seem to say what I feel best.

"If we learn nothing else fro this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no tie for hate."  said Sandy Dahl, the wife of Flight 93 pilot Jason Dahl.

Remembering 9/11

11 years ago, my day seemed oddly to stand still.
A vision haunts me now, and surely always will.
I woke to find that Towers which had stretched into the sky
were falling to the ground, and not a person knew just why.

Much time has passed since then, and life has moved ahead.
The routine part of life takes precedence over those dead.
But, once a year, the country joins to ponder on that day,
and those, once joined in unity, again think in dismay:

How could this thing have happened?  What brought this as our fate?
Why does another person become filled with intense hate?
The answers to these questions see illusive to us all.
We still keep on inquiring why those towers took that fall.

We'll never know the answers. We will always wonder why.
And we'll always have reactions as we gaze into the sky.
But we can make a promise, one we never will regret -
to make it be a certainty that we do not forget.

Southwest Sensations - My Latest Hand Picked List at Bonanza

A good friend of mine in a Facebook networking group called Networking Together is a lady who makes Native American style jewelry.  Taylor is very talented and often shares Native American photos on her Facebook wall Native Naturals

She was the inspiration for my latest hand picked list at Bonanza.  I wanted to showcase a nice variety of items with a Southwest feel to them, and also some Native American artwork and pottery.  The list is called Southwest Sensations

Here are a few of the items from the list.

There are about 20 more items included on the list with links to the sellers shops.  Please visit Southwest Sensations.  If you enjoy the list, you can like it on Facebook and make comments at the bottom of the page.  The more comments, the better the chance that it will be promoted to the main page at Bonanza.com

My Items are a Hit on Hand Picked Listed at Bonanza

I love Bonanza's hand picked lists.  It is a really nice way for sellers to showcase other seller's items.  Each of the hand picked list has a theme and the person who puts it together looks around on Bonanza to see who has items that will fit into the list.

I am honored that three of my items were selected for three different hand picked lists.  Here are the items.  Below each one is a link to the list itself, so that you can see the other sellers items too!

From the list Bel-Air Garage Sale #22 by seller Rustyreds

From the list Peaches and Cream by seller NewLeafChic

From the List Blue Crush by seller dollpassion_paris

Would love it if my readers would visit the lists and make comments below the pictures.  Doing this gives the list a chance of making it to the main Bonanza page!  Thanks...
