Rachel Ray - A Friendship-Changing Decision

I love cooking shows in general and especially Rachel Ray's daytime talk show and also her 30 Minute Meals show. Yesterday's morning show had a segment about a New York based book club. Rachael challenged the members to read The Necklace by Cheryl Jarvis and repeat its true story by giving the women $500 each to be used toward one $5,000 item to share. Her only stipulation was that the money couldn't be given to charity, and that it had to be a purchase for them to share. It was a social experiment.

In the book the women pooled their money for a diamond necklace, but the women in this challenge decided to consider other options. The discussions were heated as they offered suggestions that varied from a Buddha statue, to a puppy, a Vespa and a necklace.

Finally, they returned to the book for inspiration and decide to spend the $5,000 on a gold charm necklace. Each of the charms represented all of their unique and aesthetic sensibilities.

I watched them bicker and disagree and when one woman suggested the charm necklace, I thought "That is the perfect choice." I felt that each woman contribute a charm to it, so it would hold special significance to them when they wore it. It seems thay they agreed with me.
